Two Pan Balance
Click the above-left picture of the balance to start the application.
There are several objects that can be measured either individually or in groups. Each object has a fixed mass.
Items must be placed in a pan to compare. Items may be placed in either pan.
If the balance tilts, then adjust the masses to balance them.
Mousing over the scale's balance indicator gives a close up look at the needle. It looks like the left side is heavier, here.
There is an adjustable mass that can be used for the puzzles. Use the up and down red triangles to change the object's mass in 1 gram increments.
Place the mystery object labeled "1-64" on one of the pans. Then, using only the 6 similarly colored 1g, 2g, 4g, 8g, 16g, and 32g masses on the other pan, determine it's mass. Using this technique with the adjustable mass, you should be able to measure every mass between 1g and 64g.
This, more challenging puzzle, requires that you correctly measure the mass of the blue mystery object, labeled 1-40, using only the 4 blue masses. Using the adjustable mass object, you can similarly measure every whole mass between 1g and 40g.
